Together Everyone Achieves More...
respect, responsibility, and academic achievement.

Prepared For Success

McKay Campus School is an elementary school serving the educational needs of 450 students and their families from Pre-K through grade four with a full day kindergarten available. Second language acquisition and special education services are provided within an inclusionary environment. Administrative responsibilities are shared by an Associate Dean/Principal of Fitchburg State College and an Assistant
Principal of the Fitchburg Public Schools.

After school programming is offered each school year to best meet the needs of our students.

Social Responsibility

McKay Campus School incorporates the principles of the Responsive Classroom approach that is used in the Fitchburg Public Schools. Students and staff together create a school environment where respect for self, caring for others, responsibility for one's work, and community participation are valued goals. Responsive communication is practiced to send clear messages and arrive at consensus.

Curriculum

Within the context of the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks, our Leadership through Communication theme enables students and staff to develop literacy skills through high quality instruction that is supported by research and documented in student portfolios.Students engage in individual self-selected and cooperative learning group projects that include shared reading and writing for specific audiences such as peers, parents, partner classes, and community groups.Students develop and are expected to make frequent presentations of their work orally, in publications, and through multimedia as part of the school experience.Students and staff develop their oral language skills by discussing and defending ideas, learning to pose essential questions, and debating relevant issues in the classroom, school or community. All learners engage in learning within an inclusionary environment that is supportive of multicultural experiences, second language learners and various learning styles.Production in the visual and performing arts, telecasts and broadcasts provide opportunities for students and staff to demonstrate high level communication skills. At McKay, an emphasis is placed on meeting the instructional needs of every child through differentiated instruction so that each is challenged to reach their fullest potential.

Technology

  • All learning areas in McKay are connected to the Internet, allowing for extensive integration of technology as a learning tool throughout the curriculum.
  • Computers are utilized for student publications, graphic design and drama productions.
  • Telecommunications allow students and staff to establish collaborations between school systems and provide for distance learning opportunities.
  • The McKay Campus School website is used as an electronic bulletin board to post bulletins, showcase student work and share dialogue with parents concerning school issues.
  • E-mail communications occur daily between students, teachers and other persons involved in the learning process at McKay.
  • FSC faculty and students share collegial projects and research via the Internet system.
  • Student produced television programs allow students and staff to communicate regularly with their local and neighboring communities.

Leadership Through Communication

  • Literacy is the instructional focus at McKay supported by the magnet theme, "Leadership through Communication."
  • Members of the McKay community engage in the art of communication that provides opportunities for students and staff to demonstrate and extend what they have come to know, understand and use in order to become contributing members and leaders in the community.
  • McKay offers a strong basic skills curriculum emphasizing writing, literature and humanities. Various media and computer technologies are utilized to promote creative and critical thinking, listening, speaking, and reading and writing skills for lifelong learning.
  • There is a strong belief that literacy must be developed early within an active learning environment that is rich in oral language opportunities.
Everyone in this community strives to attain respect, responsibility and academic achievement.
  • The McKay Campus School is also the Teacher Education Center at Fitchburg State College (FSC). It has a dual mission; (1) to educate the students in the FPS System and (2) to assist in the education of FSC students who are pursuing an education degree. Pre-practicum students and student teachers who work under the supervision of master teachers assist in lowering the student/teacher ratio for instruction.

Parents and Community

McKay parents are invited to join our staff and students in enhancing their skills as communicators and participants in the education of their children. Fitchburg State College, community agencies, and our business partners are resources for our Leadership through Communication.
